This place has amazing food, however there are a few relatively minor drawbacks. 1. Takes a LONG time to get food if it's just one person running things (and sometimes even when it's the two of them, it still takes what feels like forever) 2. Okay the kitchen seems like it's a bit of a mess, but I've never seen anything that didn't look or smell safe. I've never heard of anyone getting sick from their food, and I've never gotten sick from their food (and I've eaten there many times) The good. The chicken. My god the chicken is amazing. This is what all those mass market three letter chicken joints wish their food tasted like (or that it tasted even half this good). It crispy and hot but not greasy and the sauces are flavorful without being overly salty or spicy or sour. The soy ginger is just salty enough to balance the hot/spicy ginger and the sweet chili is something I would buy by the quart if I could. (And I don't even particularly like spicy food, but I Love this stuff) We've had hot pots and noodles and all kind of pickles and kimchi and its all been delicious. It's the kind of place where if a person I trust tells me they think I will like the dish, I will just accept it as fact. The food never fails to be excellent. If the sweet older couple got some extra help to run the place so things came out a little quicker, on busy nights then it would be 5 stars all the way.

Mind you, I absolutely love dives, this place is a little too much for me. The flies were having a field day and appeared to be enjoying the meal more than me. I could not past the grossness of the utensils, the water glasses were filthy and the overall appearance of this tiny hole was too unkempt and dingy. I ordered the fries and ate them only because they were very hot and I was rationalizing that all unwanted critters have been deep fried.

Been meaning to try this spot out for some time. My family and I ordered medium wing combo, kimchi fries and chap chae. The wings were crispy and the meat was good. The sauce I'm on the fence with, it was soy garlic, it was ok but not great. I will have to try it again. My son liked the wings but he is a eating machine and will generally eat anything you put in front of him. The kimchi French fries were good but I thought there would be more flavor from the kimchi. It was like loaded French fries with kimchi, the kimchi seemed like it took on more the characteristics of sautéed onions it was good and super fresh. The fries were nuclear hot when they were brought to our table. My wife's wanted the baby to have something to eat so she ordered the chap chae. The noodles were a tad oily but delicious. The serving size was a tad small compared to other Korean restaurants.

This place is delicious. I've tried the chicken the noodles the bibimbap. All great! It's pretty much ran by one guy who I believe is also the owner. He really puts his heart into the food. All the vegetables are cut in front of you and is cut to order. Yes the place is kind of disoriented, but when it's ran by one guy who does his best it's not bad. If he had help this place would be huge.

Based on the last couple of times I've been there, I'm downgrading just a bit to four stars from five. I'm still quite a fan, but the last 2-3 times I've been there, the chicken has been too dried out. Not inedible, mind you...I still consumed everything, still love the sauce, and still love the pickled radish that goes with the chicken. There's no getting past the fact that the chicken has been too dry, though, lacking juiciness for certain. That's a problem, especially considering how absolutely *perfect* the chicken was the first time I went there. I mean, it was an absolute Grand Slam Home Run the first time in terms of All Things Chicken: juiciness, texture, sauce, heat, temperature...it all came together in the best way possible. Today, and the last time I had it, it was still good, but nowhere near the level of fantastic that I enjoyed the first time I had it. Perhaps next time I'll make mention of it and see if they can not fry the chicken as long or something. I know how good it *can* be...and I want to see them bring it back to that level consistently. I'm not through with them, at all. They do, however, need to find a way to keep my chicken moist. Here's hoping, for the future.

Update !!!! Stay away from this place reviews were 4 stars but I think it's from many college students who might not care what their eating. That kitchen is horrific nasty! with Flys and open food just laying out and open I know because it's an open kitchen at counter ( I posted a pic on first review ) well I ordered because I was already there the cheapest item which is the most popular soy ginger and the spicy wings and drums I really wanted to cancel but it was only $6 to see what all the hype was about over this place. Well chicken smelled old after it was cooked and sauced I tasted a small piece and that was all I could stomach Gangnam you otta be shame shame shame! You should have 0 stars and a health department visit.

There's just something about the way that Koreans do their fried chicken that's so good. The skin is crispy and the meat very tender and moist. This place is so close to getting there, but given that this is Detroit, I can't complain. It's not that it's better or worse than Popeye's (the standard), it's just a different experience. Wish they had just a no extra flavoring option. I'd go for the spicy sauce (they lather the sauce on pretty thick). The soy/garlic was good too, but not really my cup of tea.

Service: Not bad. The waiter is also the cook, he was nice and fairly attentive. Food: Korean fried chicken combination with both spicy and sweet. Sweet was very tasty and wasn't overpoweringly sweet. Spicy had a good kick and flavor, it wasn't over salted. Rice cake with cheese is basically rice with cheese sandwiched and grilled till the rice is crispy. It is plain but can help off set the spicy from the chicken. Omelet was interesting. Got that for my toddler son but he didn't like the carrots inside, I thought it was fine. Stir fry noodle with beef, eh tasty and seasoned well but too greasy and the amount wasn't enough for the price. Overall: Go for the chicken. I will go back to try the kimchee fries and have more chicken.

I can appreciate this place for what it is but I'm not in a hurry to come back here. Service is a little wacky if friendly and well intentioned, but don't expect fast service unless they're maybe at peak hours?! If you want faster service pull up to the bar in the front. FYI this place seemed a little dingy and the bathroom was a little gross. For what we ordered prices seemed a little high relative to the actual quality and portion size of the food. We ordered the kimchi fries, the beef fried dumplings, and an order of the spicy boneless chicken wings. The kimchi fries were pretty good but really really greasy. I would've liked it a little more if the onions weren't cut into the large 1" squares and there were more fries. The beef dumplings were fried nicely but the filling didn't have much flavor and the sauce was more like a simple soy rather than a gyoza sauce with a little more taste. The boneless wings had a great spicy sweet sauce but I'm not sure there was any actual meat wrapped up in the heavy breading. All that aside the chef did recommend we try the normal chicken meal next time...that we might like it a little better and that the sauces were different. I may take him up on that sometime but for now I'm on to the next bookmark.

1st time here. Zero ambiance and oddly quite. Kitchen visible to guests and is a total mess. Odd smell from deep fryer permeated the front part of the restaurant. Single individual runs entire restaurant by himself, so very slow service. Ordered the spicy chicken and vegetable stew. DELICIOUS!!! Will come back for this again soon.

Started craving some chicken wings and wanted to check out Gangnam Chicken, so made a weekend trip out there. Mid-afternoon visit, I was the only customer and only the owner was in. Large space, I can uderstand it could be a long wait for food when it's busy. Forewarned about the long wait for the food and cash only, I patiently waited for my order of 4 pieces (one each drumstick and wing, spicy and soy garlic) and curry rice. Pretty painless transaction and I made my way back to my apartment quickly. The soy garlic is my favorite, great crunch and nice sugar-soy bite. The spicy chicken had good heat on the back end but wasn't blow your head off hot, my favorite. The curry rice also had good heat to it too. Looking to checking out other items on the menu. Recommend and will repeat!

Went here tonight for the first time and saw the owner trying hold it down the best he could alone in the restaurant. After a few minutes, a woman arrived to help him out (I think she's also an owner?) Both of them were very kind. We had the kimchi fries, which were very good (needed a bit of salt), and the 8 piece chicken combo: 4 wings & 4 drumsticks of the spicy & soy/garlic chicken. Both versions were really good and the chicken was super crunchy. The spicy chicken was more sweet to me than anything else, but I liked it. This is a nice neighborhood spot and I would come here again!

We've only been there twice and when did the food did not disappoint. A cute old Korean man works the place all by himself and he does a fantastic job. Try the kimchi fries! Once you've had Korean fried chicken you'll never go back to anything else.

Gangnam chicken, you've made me want to take a break from eating Korean food for an indefinite amount of time. I was excited to try another Korean fried chicken joint but it was unbelievably disappointing. My heart breaks and my stomach weeps just as I'm writing this. I called in my order knowing that it would take awhile. They weren't ready with my order so I patiently waited. When I thought they were finally done the cook said that he accidentally made 16 wings instead of the 8 wings and 4 drums I originally ordered and asked if that was ok. I really wanted the drums so I said no and waited another 20 minutes for them. When I got home I noticed that the bokumbap was made with pork. When I ordered I said beef at least 3x and the woman who took my offer repeated beef. Not that big of a deal for me because I eat pork but I did really want this dish with beef and this could potentially be a huge problem for someone who doesn't eat pork, like my husband (it was supposed to be for him) The overall taste was pretty bland. For over $8 you would expect a portion to be larger than an average sized first. The chicken didn't have a strong soy garlic flavor. The amazing crispness expected from Korean fried chicken was not present. Chewy and tough are the words I would use to describe the texture. Kind of like an Asian flavored Kentucky Fried Chicken, not Korean Fried Chicken! Whatever you do, do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT order the kimchi fries unless you like the overwhelming sensation of disappointment in you're mouth. If thinner fries were used instead of steak fries it may have been salvageable but overall taste was disgusting. Toppings were mostly comprised of mayo and not kimchi. There was probably a tsp of kimchi on top. The ddukbokki had a good spiciness to it but the rice cakes were chewy. I didn't expect there to be random noodles and a hard boiled egg in it either. The hard boiled egg in it was so overcooked and GREEN that I had to find a trashcan to spit it out quickly. I may try this joint again but not any time soon, probably not for the fried chicken and also if I have 3 hours to spare. Since they are new they may still be trying to mange their flow and cooking methods.

I had heard some issues on their timing so I was fully prepared to give them a lower review if they were still slow in the service months after they opened but my experience was anything but. Granted, I called ahead but last time I had called ahead it still took them another 15 minutes or so to get everything together for a take out order. However this time, they had the chicken ready and was brought out to us in record speed and I was really impressed. I mean I will admit the service is not like the greatest thing ever, but it's a mom and pop place. It's to be expected. I hear other people are having to wait a long time, and I'm sure that that's the case for them, but for some reason, I've had good luck with this. I will say for the sauce, the spicy was really spicy this time, and the soy garlic was a tad under seasoned, but I still thought it was delicious.

Chicken is great, service is great, but my favorite is the Budaechigae!!! Their budaechigae doesn't have ramen noodles, like a typical budaechigae... the chigae tastes sooo good... it's hit the spot after eating the chicken and beer we brought in.... the hot broth just make the meal great. I would definitely get the budaechigae over and over again. As for the chicken, we got spicy and soy garlic.... the spicy really wasn't spicy, more on the sweet side, but it was great, especially with beer... love how Royal Oak as BYOB... I wish Ann Arbor had the same deal. parking lot can be limited and if it's busy, expect to wait for your food, but it's worth waiting for!

I'm soooo excited and don't know where to begin!! Two words. BON CHON aka the real KFC (Korean Fried Chicken). Bon Chon is not your average chicken wings like Buffalo Wild Wings or something. Bon Chon is doubled fried, so it takes a lot longer for this meal to come out (sometimes 30 minutes). The only other place that serves Bon Chon is Seoul Street in Ann Arbor. And let me tell you, this by far beats Seoul Street. The chicken is perfectly crisp and layered with soy garlic or a spicy sauce. I would ask for more soy garlic on my chicken wings, but it was wonderful nevertheless. In addition, you have to eat the fried chicken with the pickled daikons. I wish I had a tub of the daikons. It's perfect with fried food . You must get the chicken wings here, but on to the other food. The bibim noodles. Wow. It was salty, spicy, sweet, and the flavors were right on. My only complaint is the portion size. I just wish there was more! This place isn't cheap for chicken wings or food. It's about 8 dollars for 8 pieces, and +/- 10 dollars for a smaller bowl of noodles. But the flavors are all there. I went at prime time for lunch time, you can tell they are extremely understaffed. It was only an old cute Korean guy taking orders and cooking! So, don't expect amazing service. He was extremely nice though. They really need to hire at least 1 wait staff or have more family come in. Regardless, I will be back. It's off of main street, but not in the center of downtown Royal Oak. I hope this place picks up with more customers and the quality of food stay the same. I am just sooo glad I can get my Bon Chon fix somewhere!

We tried a little but of everything. Very cute and quaint little place! You can see right in the kitchen which we liked. Older man is the waiter and cook, gave it a personal feel. He made everything right as we ordered! Def worth stopping in to try!

The food is ok here, my friend she ordered the bibimbap and I got seafood soondooboo. The service was good since nobody else was there. Place is old looking. So the rice was super burnt at the bottom, like black and there was barely any good rice leftover. The sauce and ingredients was good. The soondooboo was ok but It didn't look red like most soondooboo. I would only come back here to try the chicken wings or street food.

Very very very just ok based on the chicken. 1.50 a piece is a bit on the high end of pricing for what I got compared to chicken shack or similar. I spent 30 for 16 pieces of chicken with tip. I'll start with what bothers me. The chicken is pre battered and appears to be par cooked ahead. I noticed bus tubs filled with chicken. True it's not the end of the world but. ... The chicken-I got half garlic and half spicy. Both good but I would have liked the spicy sauce to be thinner-personal preference. It was very thick and took away from the chicken. The garlic was perfect I like the older guy that made my meal. He was polite and not in a hurry for anyone. I appreciate that a great deal. Overall a good place.

WalKed into the restaurant and saw only one old guy he spoke I grab a menu and sat down. I was the only person In the restaurant there tables that needed to be cleaned I am assuming had not due to only one person doing everything. I ordered the small combo two wings to drumsticks with half and spicy and garlic sauce. When my order came out I had all drumsticks. The drumsticks were ok the chicken was fried really hard which dried it out (dark meat usually is moist). The spicy had a little sweetness to it. I prefer the spicy over the garlic. I wasn't impressed but I would try it again.

Korean food is my boyfriend so I am always on a quest to eat as much of it as possible. The fried chicken was delicious -so crunchy, I could eat it every day and loved the spicy sauce we got on it. We also got dukkboki and bibim noodle dish - these were very similar so I would just choose one. I wanted to try the kimchi fries but my (other(human)) boyfriend was not having it. The downside is the service is painfully slow! It was only one man working the night we went - so it was no surprise that it took the food 45 minutes to come out. We had read Yelp reviews prior to coming so we were prepared for the wait, but I was hoping to be surprised. When he took our order the server (and cook, and host, and dishwasher..) even told us it would be a long wait. Can't they just put a 'help wanted' sign in the window and see what happens? I would return to this place if I knew the food would be out in a reasonable time.

A nice, and accessable Japanese/Korean restaurant. The chicken is great, and the other dishes we tried were very good. Service was prompt and our food showed up in a reasonable amount of time. The waiter knew the menu and was very helpful explaining what we were ordering, though he may have also been the owner or manager (an owner or manager who is involved enough to handle waiting table if often a very good sign.) Bottom line, I lived it very much and plan to go back often.

The kimchi fries are nearly orgasmic. The chicken with chili sauce is so addictive. The service is sloooow. The kitchen looks gross. I try not to think about it. Seriously.

Fantastic bibimbap!!! My husband and I loved it so much. By far the best we've had in Michigan. Owners are very nice too! We got there late, but they kindly stayed open late for us. Super sweet people & great food. Thanks again!!!

Oh boy, I went to this place expecting good things from past reviews. What a disappointment. I hope it was an off night that I went, but I probably won't go back to find that out. The kitchen is wide open so you can see what's going on, NF most places this would be a good thing. Unfortunately, at Gangnam chicken, this is not to his advantage. There were plastic bowls and dishes all over the place, and he was cooking and taking orders and serving and cleaning and doing whatever. I ordered my food and he told me it would be an hour that would be an order of chicken and kimchi fries. I said to myself it's a new place, I will give him a chance taste the food, and then make my decision. The chicken was over deep fried, to the point of being tough, the sauce came from a green Tupperware bowl that look like my grandmothers. This in some places would be unique and quirky and ok, but, this kind of gave me the creeps. The kimchi fries that everyone raves about were OK and taste but really mushy, they were over sauced , which made them wet. I don't think I'll be going back, and I wish him luck in some organization.

DON'T come here if you're in a hurry. DO come here if you're looking for a QUALITY home cooked Korean meal made with lots of love and personal attention--its downright DELICIOUS! Every minute you wait for it to come out IS worth it. But unfortunately it doesn't make you forget about how long you had to wait. But instead of being upset, I just sorta felt bad for the owner/cook. The owner is a one man band and could really benefit from another cook in the kitchen. So that is why the 4 stars, and not 5. TIP: you can call your order in ahead of time, then no waiting, just eating :D And its BYOB.

Not sure what I was thinking with my prior review (4 stars), because this place really is a gem. Last time I went I loved the spicy fried chicken, but merely liked the soy-garlic. Perhaps they've upped the flavor ante since then, or perhaps my taste buds were previously a little saturated from the spicy variety (which I stupidly tried first last time), but the soy-garlic is spectacular. Make sure to eat them nice and hot, and you'll get a really nice aromatic hit from them before you break into the crispy skin. Worth the trip by the themselves, and at $6 for 4 pieces, I don't see much reason to hit Chicken Shack again for a quick fried chicken fix. I've also now sampled the budae jjigae (army base stew), which was packed with flavor and heat. I liked that they didn't ask how spicy I wanted it either, they just prepared it the way they thought it'd be best. TONS of tofu and chunks of meat, too, so it wasn't all just soup and kimchi. Beyond that, they've got a wide range of Korean interpretations of italian pasta (which is popular over there from what I understand), a bunch of little "street food" items, and obviously many other varieties of stew. Honestly, this place could be a real phenomenon with the right kind of promotion. The couple that own the place (and cook, and serve, etc.) are the nicest people, too. Originally from the Gangnam area of Seoul - before it went upscale, they told us - they just love cooking their favorite food for customers. Simple as that. EDIT: They also seemed to have hired some staff recently - there was a huge table the last time I went and the two young waitresses seemed to have everything humming along for them. That would seem to address one of the few complaints I've read thus far... Love this place.

Went here on a recent Saturday evening to try it out and thought the food was very good but the service a bit lacking. When we entered we were told to take a table of our choosing and the lone waitress brought menus. It wasn't particularly busy. I ordered the gyoza and had a small chicken combo (half & half). It took a while for the food to come out but everything was piping hot when it did. The gyoza were fried and served with a typical dipping sauce. The chicken was excellently fried and the two different glazes were very tasty. The garlic/soy was not too salty and complemented the chicken well. The spicy was a bit too sweet on the front end but really packed a good hot/spice flavor on the end! The prices were pretty good as well. My total bill came to just over 11 bucks and I was full. I liked this place a lot for the food.

This is the fourth time we've been here and still loving it. The Korean fried chicken is always great; I love the subtle soy garlic sauce. The grilled rice ball was tasty too. Who knew that cheese and rice go together so well? We've tried the ddukboki, both the black bean sauce and Alfredo, and loved it. I definitely like the black bean sauce better but our friend who isn't a fan of spicy liked the Alfredo. The first time we came, the owner brought us out a sample of kimchi. Oh man, they were all wonderful. We love supporting this small business and have always had friendly service. It is slow but everything is made to order. We'll be back again soon!

When I saw Gangnam Chicken on the What's New, I knew I had to go check it out. This weekend my boyfriend came to visit and we came here for lunch on Friday. We got there right when they opened. They weren't quite ready for us.... The waitress was really nice and made sure I knew the bathroom was just cleaned and it was slippery. The decor is spacious but nothing special. Definition of mom and pop shop. It is managed by an elderly Korean couple. They are too cute! Anyway, we ordered 16 pieces of soy garlic chicken. This is my first Korean fried chicken and man was it good! It totally reminds me of my childhood of eating Chinese fried chicken. Yum Yum! I definitely want to come back! We also got an order of Kim Chi fried rice. Nothing too special but it was good. We ate half of it and took the other half to go since we order 16 pieces of fried chicken. Came with a 4 dishes of banchan - kim chi, pickled daikon, shredded potato & carrots, and this other one I can't describe. Like another reviewer mentioned OMG the pickled daikon was so refreshing. Goes so well with the fried chicken. One men and one women restroom. Clean and spacious. Like everyone else mentioned there are only two people working this joint. The husband is the cook and the wife is everything else. They do need to hire at least one more person. Please pay them a visit!

Very good food and friendly service. Everything is homemade. Very little space which makes it very cozy. Korean food can get pricy but they were reasonable. I would totally come back here to eat and bring a friend. I had two dishes while I was here so you won't be disappointed at all with this food.

Came here to get some quick carry out. I stopped by to wait for my meal. Kitchen was completely exposed and It was too dirty to feel comfortable with it. Despite that I still took to the food with an open mind. It was mediocre at best and I'm a big Asian noodle fan. Noodles were just ok and there was barely any meat in it. Combine that with the dirtiness of the kitchen and the experience was really uncomfortable. Pass.

Came here for dinner tonight and did not leave disappointed. The food is absolutely delicious. The little Korean tapas type things before hand were great. They make a great kimchi and both the sweet and kimchi style daikon were awesome. My friend and I ordered the bimbap noodles and both the garlic soy and spicy chicken. The bimbap noodles are cold, sweet and spicy with kimchi thrown in. The chicken was great, seriously messy though. We ordered 12 spicy wings and 4 garlic soy bc my friend said he didn't want garlic soy but as soon as he saw them come out he immediately regretted it and had half. The spicy ones are covered in a thick sauce which is more sticky than anything. The garlic soy don't have much garlic flavor and there's a hint of soy. I can't decide which I liked better bc they're both delicious but so different. 2 reasons why I did not give 5stars 1. The smell. It is def fresh food and my friend warned me but I under estimated her. It's somehow freezing in there with a simulate ou thick air of fried chicken 2. Service was slow. I know everyone said it on yelp but it is slow. Worth the wait but come in there expecting to spend a good chunk of your evening there. There were several ppl getting take out but we were the only ones actually siting in the restaurant and our meal took an hour and a half

My boyfriend and I's favorite korean spot! We've tried many other Korean restaurants, but this is the best one so far! Service might be slow because its a real mom and pop place (ofcourse older people can't move as fast as they used to), but anyways we always think it's worth the wait! Their chicken is the best, most especially the soy garlic one. Their buddae jiggae and kimchi jiggae are also the best. I brought my friends here as well and they loved it! As i said, service might be slow, but you've got to be patient if you want a good true Korean Taste. My boyfriend and i always go here and the food never fail to disappoint us.

So I heard this place is new, and only has 2 people working. I assume they're husband and wife. A few of my friends and I stopped in here to try their chicken, and it didn't disappoint. The chicken was really good, and really flavorful. this isn't your regular KFC fare. We also had their kimchi fried rice and their soup. I'll make it quick and list the pros and cons, Like I usually do. Pros: +Good chicken! Cons: -Long wait time -Hard to find, since it's off the street -Portions are small (only entrees, chicken is good size!) -Standard fare of Korean dishes are small To be fair, the place is new, and there's only 2 people working. I didn't particularly like the kimchi fried rice, since I could hardly taste the kimchi. It was a little bland. Also, there could've been a little more meat in the soup that I ordered, but that could be personal preference. The people I went with weren't complaining (maybe they're not complainers), and other people on Facebook seem to like them. I'd certainly come back here to try the other dishes though. I've gotta try the bugolgi or the bibimbap, since I've heard those are Korean staple dishes. So yeah, it's A-ok.

I've been here a handful of times and have never been disappointed with the food or service. There was one incident where the owner was swamped with customers and the food took a little while to be ready, but no harm no foul. This is one of my favorite fried chicken places, and I'll continue to be a loyal customer. I always get a few pieces of fried chicken, but I also enjoy the Korean stews. The menu is relatively small, but perfectly adequate for anyone who wants a casual meal at a nice hole in the wall.

First and best double fried Korean chicken for me. Their soy garlic is a must! Please be aware that this isn't KFC: If you want fast chicken, call ahead and order. It takes around 25-30 minutes because it's made fresh for you when you order, and is double fried. It's worth the wait! Hot, juicy, moist meat... and you'll be shocked at the size of those drums. I love it spicy, but skip their spicy wings and add spicy sauce to their soy garlic flavor, which is phenomenal and bold. The other YES food is the kimchi fries. I've always wanted to like kimchi, but never really got into it- before these fries, which also have a spicy drizzle of yum on top. You want to go here soon, because you'll really want this tiny place on Catalpa in Royal Oak to succeed- they took a big chance and they deserve some props for unique food.

Just stopped in here for a quick lunch, and it was great. The owner/chef has 30 years of experience working in Korean restaurants in major cities across the country, and this is the first business he has owned himself. Had a vegetarian bibimbap, and spicy chicken wings that are real standouts. The ambience is fairly basic, but the food speaks for itself. They do a ton of takeout business and make the chili sauces from scratch. The chicken wings would make for a great dish to take to a party.

This is that place you try out when you're from out of town and want some fried Korean food. This is not the place you try again as the quality is poor and the food is meh. The spicy sauce on the wings is really good but said goodness is offset by the dryness of the chicken. The last time I ordered from this place I could not eat a single wing as the meat was so dry...so order @ your own risk. The kimchi fries and not bad...but not great. Again if you are craving fried Korean food and/or not that picky...give this place a try.

Had the Dokk Bokki, 4 piece spicy chicken. My gf had the soba noodles with veggies. I agree it's not the fastest service but that's because everything was made fresh for us! This is the BEST Dokk Bokki I have had outside of Korea! If you can handle spicy you must try it. The chicken drums and wings are double the size of usual American fare. I'm glad I got 4 because I wouldn't have finished more. The gf loved the soba as it was not spicy but a nice savory noodle dish.

Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy! We FINALLY have a Korean fried chicken place in Metro Detroit! The ddukbokki is some of the best in the area (complete with the essential hard boiled egg)! You can get Korean food seen in K-dramas at this wonderful Royal Oak Korean restaurant! If you're not familiar with Korean culture, you may find a few things frustrating. 1. Some items on the menu will not be available. 2. The service is going to be slow. 3. As of May 2014, Gangnam Chicken did not have a liquor license. Seriously! Who can eat Korean fried chicken without drinking beer? That's just sick & wrong. For those of you familiar with Korean culture, you will LOVE (L-O-V-E) this place!!! Did I mention "LOVE?" The owner is the former manager of New Seoul Garden, one of Metro Detroit's best Korean restaurants. Gangnam Chicken has an entirely different menu. It offers the food that high school and university students enjoy. I've read some reviews that criticize the chicken, but my guess is that those reviews have written by people who hadn't had Korean fried chicken previously. I was pleasantly surprised to find such authentic sweet and spicy Korean friend chicken in my backyard. There was a ton of meat on those bones. It was tender. It was flavorful. it was great that I had it as take out so that I could enjoy the succulent morsels with beer. (The only proper beverage to accompany Korean fried chicken is beer. Just FYI.) Nothing on earth is as great as Korean food. You won't want to miss your chance to try this absolute delight. Go now! It's that awesome! P.S. Try the rice ball with cheese. Evidently, Korean students love it, and I (a major Koreanophile) had never tried it before visiting Gangnam Chicken!

I had chicken legs and a kimchee omelet. Flavors were very good, but execution could use some work. Chicken was overcooked and dry.

This place made me write my first Yelp review. Ever. I found this restaurant on Yelp and was curious about all the positive reviews about the chicken. They did not disappoint. The soy garlic chicken is amazing! Four pieces might not be enough for one person. Seriously, you won't be able to stop eating. The grilled rice was on the pricey side but it was worth it. Both dishes were flavorful. Order in advance though. I placed my order around 6pm on a Tuesday and it took them about an hour to get it ready. Seems like there's only one guy working there, but he was really nice and friendly. I will be going back soon!

I feel bad for people who gave good ratings... You must not have experienced what real Korean food is..? I tried almost all their menus, hoping anything would taste "right" since it is the only korean restaurant besides Wasabi near where I live. However, NOTHING IS RIGHT. The easiest korean dish is kimchi soup, and I could not eat that thing after my first spoon. Ddukbok E? The rice cake must have been sitting in the fridge for a very long time since it smelled like it with splitting sides which is an indication of very old rice cake. Besides from the korean food, the chicken takes about 40minutes to an hour to be served, and I have no idea what they do but the chickens seems to be always super dry! What happened to the all the juice????? I would rather eat at Chicken Shack.

Everything we had here was very good! The only downside was the price. We paid around $50 for 3 entrees, and some kimchi fries (which were great!). We loved everything! The food is interesting and out of the ordinary.

    (4)
  • Jon R.

Blah. The chicken is basically nonexistent in most orders and way overpriced for what you get. I don't understand the decent ratings however the owners are very nice and work hard but use a very low quality of chicken.

I've gone twice - the chicken is tasty. I was excited to have Korean fried chicken accessible somewhere other than Ann Arbor (too far for me). The other Korean items on the menu weren't bad, but nothing noteworthy. However, both times I've gone, the wait is just inexcusable. I know they're short-staffed, but both times I had to wait 45+ minutes for my wings to come out. The moment I hear that service has gotten faster, maybe I'll give it another chance

While i really wanted to love this place because I applauded anyone who tries to bring new and different food to the barren culinary wasteland that is royal oak. However this place was supremely disappointing. I am a fan of Bon Chon chicken, but quality of this chicken was not very good. And the Kimchi fries were terrible fries with kimchi on top for 8$. I encourage everyone to try it to formulate there own opinions but for me this was a no go.

I can't even explain how happy I am that there is finally Korean food in Royal Oak, especially a bon chon chicken place! My boyfriend and I went in for dinner on a Monday night, there were about 3 other tables. Like all the previous reviews, it is literally just the "mom" and "pop" working, so be prepared that it is pretty slow, especially for the chicken since they double fry it. The chicken is fantastic. The spicy sauce was really good, has a kick but not too spicy. The Soy Garlic was good too, and you can choose wings or drumsticks so you don't get stuck with what you don't want. We also got the Kimchi fries, and ddokboki. Kimchi fries were our favorite, the 2 sauces on them were really good and the kimchi on it was sauteed. My boyfriend liked the ddoboki but it was a little bland for my taste. I am definitely coming back to try some of their stews, and the kimchi lasagna. Overall the place is very clean, friendly, and authentic. I think once they really get on their feet they can add some more wait staff.

I had Gangnam Chicken bookmarked for a while and REALLY (more than anything!!) wanted to like this place bc I looooove Korean fried chicken. However, this place didn't even come close to meeting my expectations at all. :( I came on 2 diff occasions (Wednesday @ 11:45am, Friday @ 6-7pm) just to try it out. I even tried a variety of diff foods bc I thought maybe I had just ordered the wrong thing the first time!! I even had my bf come bc I'm a picky eater, and he confirmed my worst fears...this was a disappointment. Pros/cons/food we tried: Pros: -the mom & pop who run this place are sooo nice..I even debated whether to review this place (I generally don't like to write negative reviews)!! -the chicken was OK: I preferred soy garlic as it wasn't really a wet glaze, which is why I preferred it over spicy (it came smothered with a tomato-y sauce that was really spicy during lunch but extremely mild when I came for dinner). I ordered the 8 pc once and 16 pc another time. I think 8 pc is more than enough, esp if you order other things, like I did! -if you're rating the chicken itself, my bf thinks it's better than Seoul Street bc it's not as heavily breaded Cons: -ddukbokki: I ordered this based on other reviews and also bc I loooooove ddukbokki!! I was expecting just the rice cake rolls (like it usu is at other places), but it came out with like...egg, noodles, carrots, etc...very far from what I expected. It is NOT a black bean sauce, as other yelpers have mentioned. The ddukbokki itself is good, but I paid $10 for a plate with literally 5 rice cake rolls....and a bunch of noodles and other stuff that I was NOT expecting. -the chicken was dry (IMO) -kimchi fries: DO NOT ORDER THIS. I love french fries and will devour every single french fry placed in front of me, but I couldn't get myself to even finish half of this. They're soggy thick wedge-cut fries with a tiny helping of kim chi on top. The spicy mayo (or whatever it was) was pretty good though. -soondubu jjigae (as recommended by yelpers): what. a. joke.. seriously. This was the most heartbreaking part of this meal. I was already upset bc of the long wait, but I kept telling myself it'd be worth it bc yelp said their tofu soup was good!! It came out lukewarm, not spicy enough, just a plain disappointment. We ordered the seafood soondubu jjigae, and the shrimps were tiny and looked like the same shrimps you get in cup of noodles. It was obvious the seafood used was frozen...and tiny. Tiny, mutated, frozen seafood. -korean egg roll: (see? I really did try a variety of things!) This is not an egg roll like you think it is. It is literally an omelette rolled up....and served on a plate with some red sauce on top for $5. It's also very salty. -time: oh. good. lord. I'm usually pretty patient and will wait for good food, but the wait here is just plain ridiculous. I kept trying to stay patient by reminding myself that Seoul Street takes a long time for bon chon too, but there really are some major kinks that need to be worked out here. I don't know why it took 1 hour and 10 mins to receive tofu soup (after we had already finished our entire meal and were just plain waiting around) when the table next to us, who ordered after we did, got their soup earlier. Also, chicken comes out way before everything else. -it's cold. So would I come back? Yes. If I was really craving bon chon and didn't want to make the drive to Ann Arbor, I'd come back in the middle of the week when there's not an insane wait and order only soy garlic chicken and some plain rice. :(

    (2)
  • Chad S.

The wait is worth it. It takes them some time to prepare, but from what I gather, it's just one Korean dude making everything from scratch. I love the chicken tenders, and anyone who says it's expensive, I challenge you to tell me where I can find an alternative made from fresh chicken breast with breading that good. Aside from breading and frying my own chicken, this place stands completely alone. Excellent food that is well worth the wait. There's really nothing more I can say. My favorite flavor of chicken is the soy garlic.

I love Korean food. And SPAM. I think Korean soups are my favorite soups, because they throw everything in there, and it turns out great. I obviously had the SPAM soup and loved it. Korean fried chicken is my favorite style, and this place did not disappoint. Can a girl get a bucket? They don't offer the usual things you find in a Korean restaurant, and I like that about this place. They did; however, have a random Italian section. Does anyone know anything about this? Or did I hallucinate this? This place reminds me of service back in the BD. Very polite and accommodating, but super-duper slow. We were there for 2.5 hrs and we were 2 of 6 people in the place. But! I will go back, because the food was great.

Finally a Korean fried chicken place! I've been hoping for one every since moving to Metro Detroit almost a year ago. Unlike other fried chicken places like KFC and Popeye's, Gangnam Chicken specializes in Korean style street food. My boyfriend and I went on a Tuesday night and was greeted by the owner. We ordered a medium combo to share with spicy and soy garlic sauce (buffalo sauce is now off the menu) and ddukbooki. The ddukbooki came out first and it was very good. I love the chewiness of the rice cake, but the sauce did need some salt to it (i just added a bit of soy sauce). Still I would get it again, especially good on a super cold night. The chicken was the best part of the meal. My boyfriend was a bit apprehensive about the spicy sauce, thinking that it would be too spicy for him. But in the end he loved it and preferred it over the soy garlic. I myself like the soy garlic more. But nonetheless, both flavors were excellent. I'm hoping that they add more flavors to the menu soon, like honey (hint hint). Can't wait to go again!

As a connoisseur of all things chicken, I give it my stamp of approval! As a group of 4, we had ordered the large combo of chicken (half soy/garlic and half spicy), budae chigae and this delicious cheesy rice combination. I normally love spicy chicken but the soy/garlic version was phenomenal - FULL of flavor and crispy. I had never had cheese with rice before, but it was such a great side for the flavorful chicken we got. The budae chigae came out last and was a great ending - spicy, broth with spam, hot dogs and veggies galore! The wait was not that bad considering the last bon chon chicken place I went to was over an hour for a carry out order - we waited around 20 minutes for the food but it was well worth. Check it out -- bring good friends to bide the time and you won't be disappointed!

Wow, this place makes me wish I had Korean grandparents!! The food was amazingly good. Korean comfort food is the best description I can think of. Don't come here expecting fast service, but appreciate this mom and pop store for what it is, good food cooked with love and pride. I can't wait to try everything on the menu.

Excellent Korean-American fusion. Fried chicken is best I've had in recent memory but a bit messy to eat with hands (if you get the spicy). Still the tastes are WONDERFUL. The kimchi stew has a superb taste and tons of fixins. Pick up because dine is too long

  • NO Y.

This place is great. It's so nice to have a Korean restaurant that's reasonably priced and still authentic and delicious. The chicken is great, though quite messy to eat, especially if you get the spicy one. The kimchi fries are awesome, but I would honestly have liked more kimchi in them!! Their japchae is also very good, the radish kimchi very refreshing, and they have barley tea! I feel somewhat bad for the elderly owner who is often running the place by himself, but he seems to be able to keep up fairly well. I am optimistic about this place and hope it stays around.

My boyfriend and I came here for dinner and read reviews prior to set aside time because service was slow. We were greeted by the elderly Korean couple who own the restaurant and told us to pick any seat we'd like. Aside from us, there was a table of two that were just leaving, and another larger party. Not long after we were given menus, tea (I believe the tea is a roasted-rice flavor), and iced water. We ordered the medium combo which came with 4 piece wings and 4 pieces of drumsticks in the soy garlic sauce as well as a side of kimchi fries. Since we went on a Thursday night and it wasn't too busy, it wasn't a long wait for our food. We thought the combo would come with all small pieces of chicken, but it ended up being a mix. There were two small drumsticks, two small wings (like B-Dubs size), and four large drumsticks (like KFC size). The combo also came with a small side of white pickled daikon radishes which complimented the saltiness of the wings perfectly. The soy garlic wings were very good, not too saucy, so it wasn't messy to eat. One thing I wished was that it would have been a little less salty, and more garlic flavor (for my taste- but I'm not keen on eating really salty foods). After we finished the chicken, our kimchi fries came out. The kimchi fries were topped with kimchi, a white sauce I believe was sour cream, and either a spicy mayo or cheese sauce. The fries were delicious but made me long for more sauce on top. Service was perfect, food was great, and I would definitely recommend anyone to come here. Another thing I would suggest for the owners is to install a better air filtration system, and everything would be absolutely perfect. Next time I come here I hope to try the spicy wings or the korean food! :)

First try yesterday. I tried the fried chicken, soon dobu seafood, fries with kimchee, and stole a few bites of kimchee stew and army base stew. Everything was pretty good. I think the chicken has another notch to get 5 stars, but I will still be back. Soon dobu was 5 stars as well as the other stews. They have some Italian things on the menu which I would be interested in giving a shot as well. Given that most of the food in RO is total crap, this place is great to have.

If you are looking for wings and wings only, you have found a good place. As for the service and everything else on the menu. Try something else. The Wings are perfect for take out and are amazing.

I found this wonderful smaller sized restaurant while browsing Yelp for a place to break my fast at due to my future husband having to work late and I most certainly didn't want to eat alone tonight. I walked in and an older gentleman smiled at me welcomingly then handed me a menu. From what I could see it was just him working tonight but it seemed to be a slower paced night anyway so I didn't mind at all. Now the food, I love Korean food and have tried alot of dishes at many places in the Midwest and I would have to say that this is one of the best. Their soy garlic fried chicken tasted as if you are being welcomed by someones Korean grandparents into their loving home with a bit of that love in each & every bite. It was so good that any pictures I could have taken just didn't happen due to my fast nommin' of the delicious drumsticks. Next I tried their kimchi fried rice. I will say that it was a tad greasier than I would have liked but that being said even after fasting all day, it did not upset my stomach at all and to top it off - tasted absolutely delicious. Their kimchi is probably one of my favorites now. I didn't get to ask if it was a family recipe or not but as I said it was quite delicious and also not too spicy either. I would recommend anyone come here! It's basically a version of a New York beer garden except instead you can bring your own forms of liquor due to them working on a liquor license (they've only been open for 5 months) and they will serve their most delicious food to you. A bonus? Service is friendly, they have KBS Dramas playing all the time & will even accommodate a karaoke night for you and your friends. You just have to call beforehand! Love this place!

This place has really good food. Love their chicken wings. My friends all got different things and we loved all the dishes. Recommend the chicken wings, kim chi fried rice, and boduku or w.e. expect slow service because only two people working, but very authentic food and nice people. Glad we went here

Authenticate Korean style chickens, plus many dine in meal selections, Korean, Japanese and even Italian. Everyone will love this place. Highly recommended. The owner was one of the best experienced cooks in International food industry. Thumbs up!

The food is absolutely fantastic. Only been to the place one time. Having said that it was so good we ordered a 2nd portion of the Yaki Soba to take home. The spicy Sauce for the chicken was great, giving a kick but not a pounding to the taste buds.

NO. Not worth the trouble. Fairly good food, but so slow I will never go back. I waited over an hour for carryout! This was my third time at Gangnam Chicken. My first two visits were both later in the evening, dine-in, and by myself. Service was excruciatingly slow on both occasions, but I gave them a pass because I was in no hurry. I went Thursday night to pick up dinner for my girlfriend and myself. We were both exhausted and hungry, neither of us having eaten all day. I'd been wanting her to try the food, so I went to pick it up. I walked in the door at 8:39pm, and the boy working as the server immediately asked me if he could help me. I said I wanted a carryout order but needed just a minute to see the menu. He disappeared into the back of the kitchen. At 8:41, I was ready to order. I stood and waited, and waited, and waited. At 8:51, he reappeared and took my order. I got a medium combo (4 wings and 4 drumsticks) with half soy garlic and half spicy, kimchi fried rice with beef, mushroom/veggie soup, and fried seaweed rolls. It was $40, but we were hoping to have leftovers to take to work. We didn't; there was barely anything left after the meal. There were only two parties in the restaurant: a young Korean family, and four high school kids. I sat at the table by the door and waited. I knew from my previous visits (and lots of Yelp reviews) that I'd be waiting perhaps as long as 30 minutes for the food, especially since there was just one elderly man working the kitchen (as always). One of my carryout boxes appeared on the counter at 9:20pm, and another joined it at 9:26pm. And there they sat for another 30 minutes, getting cold and soggy, waiting for the rest of the food. During the next half hour, the high school kids left, and the Korean family left, and no new customers came in, and no phone calls came in, and yet somehow my food was not ready. When it finally WAS ready, the boy bagged it all up and ALMOST handed it to me, then decided the boxes were not arranged to his liking, so he pulled it all away from my outstretched fingers and back into the kitchen, and he and the old man unbagged everything, switched them all around, rebagged them again, then tried various arrangements of putting the bags into boxes they had sitting around on the floor. Mind you, this is only two grocery bags and one smaller bag- not an unbearable burden for the 8-second walk to the car. Finally they finished playing interior decorator with my food and gave it to me with a smile. I thanked them as I power-walked out the door. I spent the drive home pissed off that I'd spent $40 and an hour of my night to starve in silence as an understaffed or lackadaisical (choose one) kitchen meandered about their evening. The only reason I didn't voice my displeasure and walk out was because I had already paid $40 and didn't want to try and fight for a refund. The chicken was decent. Not amazing, but good. Soy garlic was much tastier than the spicy, which was slathered in too much thick sauce to enjoy. The fried rice tasted good, but was exactly as greasy as other reviews have complained about. The mushroom soup was good, but incredibly overpriced at $10. The fried seaweed rolls were fine, little-finger-sized and stuffed with glass noodles. The meal was worth neither $40 nor a 30-minute wait. Waiting 60+ minutes just seals the deal, though: I'll never go back again. There are too many other wonderful places in Ferndale and Royal Oak who will not only take my money, but will provide much more responsible and respectful service as they do.

Not exactly the best of the best. My review is for those with little to no experience with korean food. My thoughts, asian food is all alike, wrong. The only thought I had after odering was, "hope this shit doesnt give me diarrhe!" Comparison to chinese food far from it. As a recommendation of the owner I tried the chicken, which was deep fried. Nothing spectular. I expected meal options only to find out no such thing. He recommended some french frie side, and boy was it a disappointment. I didnt even hardly eat any of it. I dont know what the hell was on that. As far as chicken goes, same disappointment. Not exactly worth the cost. Very little options as far as menu goes. To those who Enjoy Chinese food and are willing to explore I say do so with strong caution. After consuming a meal here I did not feel satisfied. I would not recommend returning here on several accounts that consist of price overall bargain for cost, product and last options that you have available. The fact that there was no such meal available made it seem à la cart and not catering to those who seek more take-out options. Royal oakers proceed with caution and look at the other options that you have available in the near surrounding areas.

Went with a friend who is not a kimchi fan and ordered the rice ball with cheese. Yes. That is my new jam. It's simple, and yummy. The rice is crispy on the outside (not deep-fried/fried. more like the crispy rice on bi-bim-bap) and the cheese is mild and melted.

It amazes me that someone would complain about wings being too large.... This isnt a sports bar, its real chicken, which does take a while to deep fry. The sauce was tastey, salty and sticky, hands down the most crispy wings Ive ever had, and I order wings quite a lot as I dont deep fry at home. The owner was super polite and even turned up the heat for us noticing that I was cold. So glad this place is near our home! The soup was delicious too, very authentic and bubbling hot.

I was very excited to try this place, LOVE Korean food. My husband waited an hour for his carry out. Stir fried rice with beef & a seafood noodle dish. The beef dish smelt so gross I couldn't even taste it. The noodle dish was just a disgusting pile of goo, couldn't stomach that one either. The kitchen is open and was a total filthy dirty mess. Don't waste your money.

Really good chicken, get the spicy. Wife had Korean pork fried rice with kimchee, and said it was really good as well. Parking lot in front, and far away enough from downtown to get carry out on weekends. This is a mom and pop operation, and they absolutely need to remodel the place and get some decent ventilation because it smells like a deep fryer inside.

We truly needed a Korean Fried Chicken (KFC) in our area. The chicken is just lie the one's you get in Korea. It's crispy and full of flavor. I also tried the Carbonara Dduk Bbok Gi and it was really good as well. They don't use MSG like the other Korean restaurants. This place hasn't been live very long but I hope they will be successful. If you plan on eating in, it may be helpful to call ahead. When carryout orders get busy, the service can be a bit slow. Once they get some help in the kitchen, they should be okay.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be kidnapped by a middle-aged Korean couple? To be held captive, while you wait ungodly long amounts of time for small, meager rations of food? To smell for days of pungent cooking oils once released from their dark, bare-boned room (restaurant) that they kept you in? To see other captives (customers) helplessly look over to you to see if any answers are available as to when they will eat or how long you have been kidnapped (sitting at your table)? To be forced to watch looped Korean Idol re-runs on a television that is only used for said purpose? If this is the kidnapped survivor-style experience you are seeking PLEASE dine at Gangnam Chicken as you won't find a more true to life comparison in my estimation without actually being abducted. In fact, maybe you (like the other captives I dined by) are reading this exact review right now as you sit in the restaurant wondering "Why have I been here for 45 mins without any food? Why is the tea served in Mexican beer glasses? Have other people experienced this in the past, even though I placed my order ages ago? Should I just leave and go somewhere with real wait staff and more then just one man in the kitchen so I can actually eat something tonite?" If you are reading this while held prisoner here- SAVE YOURSELF NOW. You are in a hostage situation and unless you want to actually pay money for it like some sick, expensive role play fetish, get up from the invisible shackles, get back to your car, hit the gas and play some Iron Maiden really loud as you make your fast get away "Run for the hills. Run for your liiiife!"

I am so happy to be within walking distance. The food was very delicious. I loved the garlic soy chicken but ask for more sauce. The kimchi fries were awesome!! Chicken fried rice was very yummy too. I went back two days after my first try. Make sure you have time to wait or place your order in advance.

If you are expecting an authentic Korean style fried chicken experience, this is not a place to go. The fried chicken is not close to the ones in NY or CA. Apart from the Korean style, the chicken itself is not tasty at all. I would rather go BWW.

Love to be one of the first to try a new restaurant. Was very disappointed. I was told the Chicken tenders were fantastic but then I was told they take very long to cook - so changed to the order to a combo. The cook said we could order 2 types of sauces. The chicken only had one sauce. They do warrant the 1 star. The chicken wasn't fatty and the pieces were huge and the meat was moist. You could barely taste the soy garlic sauce. Very disappointed. I guess the early bird doesn't always mean the best .

Terrible service, terrible food. I got better chicken at the Twisted Kilt yesterday. Order took forever to be served. My wife and I feel like we wasted our money here. Noodle dish was greasy. Also very over priced for what you get. Could have gotten better carry out from Kam's for half the price. No thank you - you can keep this place, if it lasts.
